VMware vs Hyper-V vs Proxmox: Choosing an Enterprise Virtualization Platform

9 min read 1 August 2025

Why Does Virtualization Platform Selection Matter?

The hypervisor is the foundation of enterprise infrastructure; it manages all virtual machines, storage, and networking running on top of it. Following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware in 2023, the licensing model underwent radical changes: perpetual licenses were eliminated, subscriptions became mandatory, and prices increased dramatically. This development prompted many organizations to evaluate alternatives.

General Profile of the Three Platforms

VMware vSphere (Broadcom)

The uncontested leader in enterprise virtualization for many years. Offers mature features such as vCenter, vMotion, HA, and DRS. However, the post-Broadcom licensing model has made it an expensive option for large-scale environments.

Current licensing model: VMware vSphere Foundation and VMware Cloud Foundation — per-processor subscription.

Microsoft Hyper-V

Included with the Windows Server license; no additional hypervisor cost. Offers tight integration with the Microsoft ecosystem. A management hub can be built with System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).

Proxmox VE

Debian-based, open source, and free (commercial support subscription optional). Provides both KVM (Linux virtual machines) and LXC (containers) support in a single platform. Has a rapidly growing user base in Europe.

Enterprise Support and Ecosystem

  • VMware: Widest third-party ecosystem; Broadcom support is still strong but expensive
  • Hyper-V: Microsoft Premier Support, Active Directory integration, included with Windows Server license
  • Proxmox: Strong community forum; commercial support subscription (Proxmox Server Solutions) is available

Which Platform Is Right for Whom?

VMware vSphere — Choose If:

  • You manage a large-scale environment (50+ hosts)
  • Advanced automation such as DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) is required
  • You want to preserve your existing investment and expertise
  • Budget is not a constraint

Microsoft Hyper-V — Choose If:

  • You already have a Windows Server Datacenter license (Hyper-V included)
  • The Microsoft ecosystem (AD, SCCM, Azure Arc) is used heavily
  • Cost optimization is a priority
  • Hybrid Azure (Azure Stack HCI) will be used

Proxmox VE — Choose If:

  • You want to minimize licensing costs
  • Open source philosophy and vendor independence are important
  • LXC containers and KVM VMs will run side by side
  • Ceph distributed storage integration is planned
  • Mid-sized environments (2–20 hosts)

For Those Migrating from VMware

Due to cost increases following the Broadcom acquisition, migrations from VMware to Proxmox accelerated in 2024:

VM Conversion with Virt-v2v

# VMware VMDK'dan KVM/QEMU formatına dönüştürme
virt-v2v -ic vpx://vcenter.sirket.local/Datacenter/host/Cluster \
  "WindowsServer2022-01" -o local -os /var/lib/vz/images/100/

Proxmox Backup Server Integration

# PBS reposunu Proxmox VE'ye ekle
pvesm add pbs pbs-storage \
  --server 192.168.1.200 \
  --datastore main \
  --username backup-user@pbs \
  --fingerprint <fingerprint>

Conclusion

Virtualization platform selection must be made by evaluating your existing investment, budget, technical capacity, and long-term strategy together. VMware's enterprise depth remains strong; however, the post-Broadcom cost structure is directing many organizations toward Hyper-V or Proxmox. As NRC Sistem, we support your organization in analyzing your existing virtualization infrastructure, providing platform selection consulting, and planning and executing migration projects.
