What Is VPN?
VPN (Virtual Private Network) is the technology that creates an encrypted, isolated tunnel between two points over public internet infrastructure. The user can access the corporate internal network as if they were physically connected at the office; all traffic is encrypted and unreadable from the outside.
How Does a Corporate VPN Work?
The connection process takes place in three stages:
- Authentication — Username/password or certificate-based verification
- Tunnel establishment — An encrypted channel is opened using IPsec, SSL/TLS, or WireGuard protocol
- Data transmission — All packets are routed through the corporate network in encrypted form
VPN Types
Site-to-Site VPN
Permanently connects two office networks to each other. Widely used for branch-to-headquarters connections. An IPsec tunnel between Fortigate devices is a typical example.
Remote Access VPN
Enables individual users to connect to the corporate network remotely. Works with clients such as SSL VPN or FortiClient.
ZTNA (Zero Trust Network Access)
A modern approach that is beginning to replace traditional VPN. Every connection request is accepted only after the user identity and device security have been verified; instead of broad network access, only access to authorized applications is granted.
Benefits of VPN in a Corporate Environment
| Benefit | Description |
|---|---|
| Secure remote work | Access to the corporate network from home or while traveling |
| Data encryption | Protection against sniffing attacks |
| Branch integration | Connecting geographically distributed offices into a single network |
| Compliance | Meeting KVKK and ISO 27001 requirements |
Situations Where VPN Alone Is Not Enough
VPN ensures transmission security; however:
- It does not guarantee the security of the connecting device
- It does not block lateral movement within the network
- It requires additional countermeasures against credential theft
For this reason, VPN in enterprise environments must be used in conjunction with MFA (multi-factor authentication), EDR, and network segmentation.
How to Choose the Right VPN Solution?
Determining factors in the selection:
- Number of users — A 10-person team and a 500-person organization cannot use the same solution
- Protocol support — IPsec, SSL, WireGuard
- Ease of management — Centralized policy management
- Vendor ecosystem — Compatibility with the firewall you use
The Fortinet FortiGate and FortiClient combination offers both high-performance and manageable solution for small-to-medium-sized organizations.
Conclusion
VPN has become a standard component of the remote work model. A properly configured VPN infrastructure creates a critical foundation for data security, compliance, and business continuity. As NRC Sistem, within the scope of our Fortinet partnership, we provide VPN design, installation, and management tailored to your organization.
